Tonks. Welcome back to Tonks Talk, everyone. Today we are joined by Cedar, Pine, and Tink from the Lane Area Ferret Shelter and rescue in Eugene, Oregon. But first, I'd like to welcome my amazing sister, Mina.
Mina. Well, well, what an intro. I can only assume you want something, and the answer is no! So, the flashing ball is mine. But, if you ask daddy nice enough, I'm sure he will get you your very own.
Tonks. (Tonks' eyes flash disappointment for a second before she replies.) I guess you are right. I'll have to ask him tonight before I forget. Now I'd like to welcome our guests. Thank you for joining Mina and me on today's show.
Cedar. Thank you for having us. I'm very impressed by the studio as I had no idea what to expect. We had heard some stories, but I just couldn't picture it in my mind.
(Just as Cedar finishes speaking, Obi and Sadie come in with refreshments and treats. There is an audible intake of breaths from the three visitors as they recognize Obi. Tonks and Mina both giggle.)
Tonks. Thank you, Obi, Sadie. Would you guys like to sit in? (Obi's eyes light up, and he hides a grin.)
Obi. I would love to. Thank you.
Sadie. I would, but I'm gonna go grab a short nap.
Mina. (looking disappointed) I totally understand. Sleep well.
(Sadie greets each of the visitors on her way out and ensures them that she will hang out before they leave.)
Mina. Sadie is getting older and hasn't felt well for a while. Mommy and Daddy have been concerned and are closely watching her.
Cedar. I understand. Like her, I'm no young kit myself.
Tink. Miss Tonks, what are the beverages?
Tonks. The lighter amber liquid is Pickle Juice,https://www.etsy.com/listing/294781515/ferret-skin-and-coat-supplement-treat, and the pinkish fluid is Salmon oil. They are both delicious. I recommend just having a taste of each, then you can decide which one you like more. Feel free to drizzle a little on your soupie as well. (Pine's eyes light up as she tries the pickle juice while drizzling some on her soupie.)
Mina. (after seeing the look on Pine's face nods and says.) Tasty stuff. I've been hooked since the first time I tried soupie. At first, I didn't think I would like it, but now those are my favorite meals of the day.
Tonks. I hardly ever eat the soupie. Cedar, while the youngsters are eating, why don't we start with you. Tell us about yourself and how you came to the shelter.
Cedar. You already know my name, Cedar. I'm male and about six years old. I was born on May 12th, 2016, and I am considered silver in color. Pine and I came to the shelter on May 12th this year.

(Pine's eyes start to tear up when Cedar mentions coming to the shelter. Tonks hands Pine a box of tissues.)
Tonks. Are you ok, dear? Did something happen that I didn't hear about?
Pine. (Sniffs and wipes a few tears, then answers.) I feel it is all my fault we came to the shelter.
(Cedar Sighs while Mina hugs Pine, and then he speaks.)
Cedar. Pine, we talked about this. It wasn't your fault. Sometimes things happen, and not always because of something someone did.
Mina. Let me guess. When your human brought you home, you realized there was already a ferret several years older than you living there, and he had been for a while. Not very long, however, you found yourselves going to the shelter. I bet I even know the reason. (Pine looks attentively at Mina as she talks and shows complete amazement at the following line.) You were surrendered because the owner could no longer take care of you correctly, right?
Pine. (looking more stunned.) How did you know all that? We hadn't said yet why we were there.
(Mina giggles and Tonks jumps in.)
Tonks. Because that happens a lot. Many of the ferrets that have been on the show experienced the same thing.
Mina. Humans seem to have a bad habit of taking on too many things. But, eventually, something has to go, and it's usually an animal. So, why don't you tell us a little more about yourself, Pine?
Pine. My name is Pine, I am female, and I was born on May 12th, 2020, which makes me two. I am also silver in color.

Obi. May of 2020, you say. That means you were purchased during the pandemic. That means your human may have had a lot of extra time. Once the pandemic was over, they probably found themselves overwhelmed. You guys probably weren't the only things your human had to give up.
(Pine blushes when she realizes that Obi was the one speaking to them. Tonks and Mina giggle while Cedar seems surprised that Obi can talk. Tink finishes her soup with a small slurp.)
Cedar. Even I hadn't thought of it like that, Mr. Obi. You indeed are as intelligent and wise as they say. (Tonks facepaws while Mina shakes her head. Cedar looks confused.) Did I say something wrong?
Tonks. It isn't you. It's him. (Tonks points at Obi, and Obi grins.) He will ensure we hear how "Intelligent and wise" he is every day. That's all.
(Tonks and Mina Sigh almost simultaneously, and everyone laughs.)
(Mina glances over at Tink and speaks up.)
Mina. Tink, your turn. What can you tell us about yourself?
Tink. My name is Tink, and I am a champagne female a little over a year old. My birthday was 5/25/21. I joined the shelter on 6/9/22.

Tonks. What brought you into the shelter at such a young age?
Tink. My human became pregnant and realized she couldn't care for a baby and a ferret.
Mina. I'm happy your human is having a baby, but it sure is a bummer that you had to go to the shelter. Tonks can tell you that ferrets aren't great pets for babies. (As she says this, she starts to giggle, and Tonks looks back, feigning hurt feelings. Obi and Remus laugh while the guests all look confused.
Tonks. When I was purchased, I came home to a house that already had a human baby. Let's just say I had a problem leaving the baby's feet alone. Finally, the humans couldn't take it anymore and brought me to the shelter. Why don't you take a hike! (This last was aimed at Obi, who is howling with laughter. This also brings some laughter from the guests, causing Tonks to blush until she finally laughs along.)
Mina. So how do folks get to meet you guys?
Cedar. First, people must call the shelter and do a short interview. The number is (541)484-1090.
Pine. After that, they set up an appointment to come see us.
Tonks. Is there anything else people should know before calling?
Tink. People should be aware that Cedar and Pine must go together. In addition, they should be prepared to meet other ferrets because there are several in the shelter.
Mina. I am sure you are all going to find a new home soon. Thank you for coming on the show today. It's been wonderful to meet you, and I look forward to hanging out after the show.
Tonks. I would also like to thank Lane Area Ferret Shelter and everyone who stops by to view this interview. Join us next time as we introduce a few more ferrets looking for a home.
